Many cultures treat grief as a normal part of life, and freely express grief when appropriate. Our Western culture often fails to know how to deal with grief, preferring to push it aside.
We may be embarrassed or uncomfortable with the expression of grief, by ourselves or others. Grief is often regarded as something to get over with quickly and return to life as "normal".
